Animal Concern contacts MPs about animal testing ahead of debate

Ahead of this afternoon’s debate on the ‘End testing on dogs and other animals’ petition, last week, Animal Concern contacted MPs to brief them on animal testing in the UK.

The briefing highlights:

  • That public opinion indicates opposition to animal testing in the UK;

  • Recent evidence published by Animals International and Animal Aid which exposes scenes of intense trauma and cruelty in UK laboratories;

  • That the UK Government’s plans to phase out animal testing risks being a symbolic commitment that does not make actual change;

  • That toxicity testing is done to fulfil EU obligations despite the UK having left the EU in 2020;

  • Animal testing statistics, published by the Home Office in 2024;

  • That dogs, mainly beagles, are routinely used in toxicity testing and subjected to intense cruelty; and

  • That evidence gathered by Animal Concern in our 150 years of being a charity indicates that not much has changed in terms of animal welfare within laboratories across the UK.

We are calling on the UK Government to:

  • Adhere to its plan to phase out animal testing;

  • Commit to replacing all dogs with mice in testing by 2029; and

  • Reduce all animal testing by 20% to below 2 million by 2029.
