Tackling The Terror of Fireworks

Help Designate Firework Control Zones for all Councils

In June of 2023, Under the Firework & Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022, Scottish Local Authorities were granted the power to propose Firework Control Zones (FCZs).

Where a FCZ is designated, it is a criminal offence for a member of the public to ignite a firework, including on private property.  Police Scotland are responsible for enforcement of any offences under this Act. *

A local authority can consider an FCZ, or a community may request an FCZ for the following reasons:

  • Misuse of fireworks/injuries

  • Impact on vulnerable groups

  • Environmental protection

  • Animal welfare

Residents in Scotland CAN Make the Difference!

If you live in a community that is negatively impacted by the use of fireworks, your community can pressure your local council to use their position of power to implement a Firework Control Zone.

We urge all 32 Scottish local authorities to act now and start the process of consulting with local residents, workers and stakeholders to get these zones established, but it cannot be done without the involvement of those living in the communities.

You can join us by writing to your local Council leader and/or Chief Executive. Click this link for a table showing who these are, and see a copy of our letter here.

Prior to a decision to designate an FCZ or to amend or revoke an existing FCZ, the local authority must consult with:

  • Those living and working within the boundaries of the proposed FCZ.

  • Others living near the proposed FCZ.

  • Any other persons the local authority of other partners consider having a connection with, or interest in the proposed FCZ.

With enough pressure from residents it is entirely possible to see Firework Control Zones become reality throughout Scotland.

* Exemptions within an FCZ is a public firework display, subject to certain requirement and use of F1 Fireworks which are permitted to be used within an FCZ, subject to any other legal controls on their use.
